SCCA Format for 2008 Season

Guys here is the SCCA's 2008 format. Does SCCA really needed to change the format?? Do we really need 16 games a season?? Let's hear what you think...

At the end of the 2007 season, teams in each division will be ranked based on the points table. In 2008, all divisions will have 9 teams. The makeup of these divisions is detailed below.

Division 1
Teams ranked 1 through 8 will stay in Div. 1 and while teams ranked 9 through 12 will go to Div. 2. Also, the Div. 2 League champions will come up to Div. 1. This will make up the 9 teams in Div. 1. This division will be called PREMIER League 1.

Division 2
Four teams (9, 10, 11 & 12) from Div. 1 will come to this Div. Teams 2 through 5 in Div. 2 will stay in this Div. They will be joined by the Div. 3 league champions. This will make up the 9 teams in Div. 2. This division will be called PREMIER League 2.

Division 3
Teams ranked 6 through 12 in Div. 2 will move down to this Div. They will be joined by team #2 in Div. 3 and the Div. 4 league champions. This will make up the 9 teams in Div. 3. This division will be called SCCA League 1.

Division 4
Teams ranked 3 through 11 from Div. 3 will make the 9 teams in Div. 4. This division will be called SCCA League 2.

Division 5
Team #12 from Div. 3 and teams ranked 2 through 8 in Div. 4 will make up the 8 teams in this Div. This division will be called SCCA League 3.

PREMIER Leagues 1 & 2 will play 45 overs, while SCCA Leagues 1, 2 & 3 will play 40 overs. From 2008 season onwards, only one team will move up and/or down a Div. The top 4 teams from each Div. will qualify for the playoffs.

Division 4 in the new format would then comprise of most of the teams from the current division 3. So, division 4 (new format) = division 3 (current format). This format is strange because the top team in our division would get 2 promotions right away and moves to division 2 in the new format.

In my opinion it's just a way of marginalizing lower division teams as it will take longer to get to the highest division. Players will be more likely to 'migrate' to other teams rather than stick with a team to get to the next division. It's not so much a problem with the 9 teams/div concept as that they have 5 tiers that is counter-productive. There may be a distinction between some of the upper division teams (due mostly to congregating paid players) but for the most part I don't think there is that much difference.
